News continues to trickle in regarding Blizzard’s in-progress Overwatch League. Today, on the heels of seven team announcements, the company revealed new info on the League’s player signings, salaries, and more.
Following a player scouting report that polled and compiled top performers from among the game’s 30 million+ players, the Overwatch League is opening an official player signing window for Season 1. From Aug. 1 to Oct. 30, 2017, announced teams will officially be able to sign players, whose contracts will have to include a few guaranteed benefits.
According to Blizzard, players must be signed to one-year contracts that may be extended by an additional year. These contracts will guarantee at least $50,000 in salary, as well as health insurance and retirement savings plans. Players must also receive 50% of the team’s performance-based income -- any winnings from the first season’s $3.5 million prize pool.
Also revealed today were a few rules of conduct for the official teams. Rosters must field 6-12 players, there will be no region locking on players per their home country or place of birth, and teams will be required to maintain player housing and practice facilities “which will meet professional standards set by the Overwatch League.”
“The Overwatch League is set to launch later this year,” Blizzard said in a press release, “and your support and excitement has been humbling and inspiring for all of us at the League Office. We look forward to sharing more information around the League’s format and timeline, as well as keeping you up-to-date with new team announcements.”
